Braising Steak

Lean slices of tender beef braising steak will make a hearty soft and satisfying stew  – the meat is ideal for slow braising, so pop it in the oven for a long low cook.  The homely warm smell will welcome you home, perfect after a winter walk.

Available in 500g to serve 4 or 1kg to serve 8 family or friends.

  • If you didn’t know, braising means cooking with the lid on, usually finishing in the oven after preparation and bringing to a simmer.  Cook long and low…..This is needed as the meat comes from hardworking muscle groups, which makes them very tasty, but does mean it needs to be cooked the right way.  Just because it is called ‘steak’ don’t try to sizzle on a griddle!
  • Brown the meat on all sides in the pan before adding the other ingredients, this adds a richer flavour and seals the meat to prevent the juices from seeping out.
  • It will take about 1 1/2 to 3 hours to become tender. As soon as it yields to a fork, it’s done. With braising, just a little effort yields amazing results, but beware that overcooking can dry it out, however, if you turn it down really low, you could cook it overnight!
